For several years, the board meetings of the South Platte Valley Historical Society included two secretaries—one of them the ‘official’ secretary, the other, a small girl who recorded her own version of the minutes.
Sitting beside her grandmother, Christine Ridgeway, who was the ‘real’ secretary, Jessica Ridgeway would intently concentrate on filling pages with scribbles. Often, the little girl would draw pictures for other board members to take home.
In honor of the memory of Jessica, and her involvement with the SPVHS, the board of directors has established a scholarship for a young student to attend a summer session at the Independence School in the Society’s Historic Park. The scholarship recipient should, like Jessica, be eager to learn, kind to others, and someone who has made a positive impression on friends and acquaintances.

The school offers three-day sessions for students who are at least seven years old. Each session includes school days filled with ‘old fashioned’ learning from McGuffey Readers, writing on slates, and games from the late 19th century. Students also learn about the history of the South Platte area.
